Apprenticeships involve a combination of formal learning with on-the-job training and mentorship. The apprenticeships normally run from one to six years, with the average being four. Businesses are using apprenticeships to address skill gaps, recruiting difficulties and costs, and high employee turnovers.

The St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce, South Bend, is working the Department of Labor, WorkOne and Purdue Technical Assistance Program to put together a presentation to help businesses assess whether an apprenticeship program is a viable option for them.
